Benteng Fort Rotterdam
Fort Rotterdam or Fort Ujung Pandang (Jum Pandang) is a heritage fortress of the Kingdom of Gowa-Tallo. The location of this fort is on the edge of the west coast of Makassar City, South Sulawesi.
The fort was built in 1545 by the 9th Gowa King named I Manrigau Daeng Bonto Karaeng Lakiung Tumapa'risi 'kallonna. Initially the fort was made of clay, but during the reign of the 14th Gowa King Sultan Alauddin the construction of the fort was replaced with padas sourced from the Karst Mountains in the Maros area. Ujung Pandang Fortress is shaped like a turtle who wants to crawl down into the sea. In terms of its shape it is very clear the philosophy of the Kingdom of Gowa, that turtles can live on land and at sea. So even with the Kingdom of Gowa that triumphed on land and in the ocean.
The original name of this fort was the Ujung Pandang Fortress, also the Gowa-Makassarese people called this fort Panyyua Fortress which was the headquarters of the frog troops of the Kingdom of Gowa. The kingdom of Gowa-Tallo finally signed the Bungayya agreement, which one of the articles required the Kingdom of Gowa to surrender this fort to the Dutch. When the Dutch occupied this fort, the name Benteng Ujung Pandang was changed to Fort Rotterdam. Cornelis Speelman deliberately chose the name Fort Rotterdam to commemorate his birthplace in the Netherlands. The fort was later used by the Dutch as a center for spice shelters in eastern Indonesia.
At the Fort Ujung Pandang complex, nowadays, there is the La Galigo Museum in which there are many references to the history of the greatness of Makassar (Gowa-Tallo) and other areas in South Sulawesi. Most of the fort buildings are still intact and become one of the attractions in the city of Makassar.
